The Name of God is Steadfast Love

· community,love,church

In one of the most magnificent passages in all of Scripture, Moses, alone with God on the top of
Mt. Sinai, boldly requests of the LORD show, “Please show me your glory” (Exodus 33:18).
Shortly thereafter:

"The LORD descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of
the LORD. The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, 'The LORD, the LORD, a God
merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children's children, to the third and the fourth generation.'" (Exodus 34:5-7)

We’re tempted to immediately zero in on questions concerning the fairness of sin having
generational consequences. It is indeed clear that this God is not one to be trifled with.

It’s also clear that this God who judges the sin that contaminates his creational order of shalom,
is so utterly wonderful, that his very name is “merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and
abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love . . . forgiving . . .” This love
ultimately takes shape in the person of Jesus Christ and his death and resurrection by which
God himself came in the flesh to redeem his people and his world.

The very name of God is steadfast love.

In our sermons, Sunday school, and community groups this fall, we want to reflect together on
what this means for our life together and in the world. We want our mission statement, “To
experience and extend the life-changing love of Jesus Christ . . .” to be more true of us than
ever. We want life-changing encounters with God’s love that transform us more fully into a
community of love for the sake of the world. This isn’t just sloganeering. We really want this!
Would you pray and participate this fall to this end?
