The Woodlawn neighborhood on Chicago's southside has so much potential and attention now, but still sees ongoing needs of poverty, violence, and access to resources. The pandemic has brought some of those disparities into greater focus. One of the greatest privileges we’ve had over the years, has been supporting Brad and Shannon Beier as they, along with their four girls, have planted Living Hope Church in Woodlawn. Living Hope has a great impact in this community and does its good work largely in partnership with churches like Trinity.
This year, we have another opportunity to come alongside them and to make another significant impact. Every summer Living Hope provides a six-week day-camp for young children and teens of Woodlawn. With COVID19 concerns in mind, they are planning to limit registration to 40 kids this year. They are able to higher teens and young adults to work as staff at the six-week camp with the assistance of partner churches. At summer camp, the youth hear the gospel woven into the camp theme and weekly Bible studies, they play hard, learn enrichment skills and take field trips to explore the city. What a wonderful way to keep kids busy, where they might otherwise be at risk at home or without much structure, on the streets! Living Hope's camp costs $350 per child.
Each family is asked to pay a very low $50 registration fee per child to help keep camp one of the most affordable six weeks in any Chicago camp! We are joining with others to provide as many scholarships that we can of $300 per child. With the impact that this ministry can have in the lives of these kids it is an incredible “bang for the buck”. And our help will help young adults and teens to have a needed summer job, for some of them, their first job. For the month of May, the Benevolence Offering at Trinity will be dedicated to this purpose. Will you please consider helping as much as you can to provide as many scholarships as possible?
